Therapist Spotlight: Candace Love, MA, LSW

What inspired you to become a counselor?

As a black woman, I grew up in a religious Christian home that didn’t hold space for anything but prayer. Although, I fully believe in and stand by the power of prayer. I also needed further assistance. I knew at a young age I dealt with anxiety but only received prayer. I waited for my anxiety to end, and sadly it did not. I grew old enough to see a therapist and saw how powerful they were in helping manage my anxiety and many other pressing issues. It is an absolute honor to be able to assist others with the many things they may be dealing with.

What is something you would like new clients to know about beginning the counseling process?

Most clients of mine are stressed about starting counseling. I like to look at counseling as having the right tools in your toolbox for certain life circumstances and that this time is to equip you and sharpen those tools.

How would you describe your style or approach in counseling?

My approach truly depends on the person in front of me. I believe in meeting clients where they are and doing the work collaboratively. I also see each client as an individual, so I will work with a client through the best framework for their individual needs, which may include Emotional Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Psychodynamic Theory. If other frameworks work best for the client, we will explore those at that time. My style also includes breathing exercises throughout the session when needed, as we all forget that breathing impacts our bodies and assists us through a mental health crisis moment.

What self-care practices do you enjoy doing most?

My guilty yet not so guilty pleasure is working out at Orangetheory! I also love walking and enjoy being near the water. If I don’t have enough energy to exercise, I enjoy playing with my puppy at the dog park.
